Founded in 1951, Tianjin Medical University became the first medical university after the foundation of P. R. of China. TMU is recognized by WHO and is one of the 74 universities to acquire authorization by the Ministry of Education to admit students from abroad.
TMU is also one of the 97 universities which are emphatically constructed by the National "211 Project". TMU has been admitting foreign students since the 1960s. Presently, the University has more than 1,430 foreign students from about 64 countries. The International School (IMS) of TMU is in charge of the education, management, and recruitment of international students. The University consists of qualified teachers and it provides favorable teaching facilities. For 20 years, the University has been providing courses in the English Medium.
TMU covers a total land area of 400,000 square meters. There are nearly 7,493 faculty members, including 5,946 professors and 1,092 associate professors. There are about 8,515 students studying in TMU. Out of these, there are 5,127 undergraduates, 1,593 postgraduates, 1,260 international students, 347 doctorates, and 494 training students. At present, it offers 44 authorized doctoral programs, 3 mobile post-doctoral stations, 61 authorized master programs with 158 doctoral supervisors, and over 500 master supervisors.
